Methodology: CIG Benchmarks and CIG Universe

Overview of Crypto Insights Group Indcies and Benchmarks
Crypto Insights Group provides two complementary datasets designed to support the evaluation of digital asset strategies: the CIG Universe and CIG Benchmarks.

The CIG Universe offers a broad, exploratory view of the digital asset strategy landscape. It aggregates performance across funds and separately managed accounts tracked on the platform, enabling analysis of manager dispersion, strategy trends, and the evolving structure of the market. The CIG Benchmarks are formalized indices constructed using stricter inclusion criteria and standardized methodologies. These benchmarks are designed to support institutional use cases, including performance measurement, reporting, and benchmarking against defined strategy categories.

Together, the CIG Universe and CIG Benchmarks provide both breadth and precision. The Universe enables discovery and analysis across a wide set of managers and strategies, while the Benchmarks provide consistent, institutional-grade reference points for evaluation. Data displayed across the Crypto Insights Group platform reflects the CIG Universe unless otherwise specified.

Overview of CIG Universe
The CIG Universe is a continuously maintained dataset designed to provide transparency into performance across the digital asset hedge strategy landscape. The dataset aggregates performance information from funds and separately managed accounts tracked within the Crypto Insights Group platform and is intended to provide users with a broad view of manager performance, strategy dispersion, and the evolving composition of the digital asset fund ecosystem.

Unlike formal benchmark indices, the CIG Universe functions as an exploratory market dataset. It allows users to analyze performance trends across strategies and individual managers while observing how the structure of the digital asset active strategy market changes over time.
Coverage & Benchmark Construction
The CIG Universe includes open-ended funds and separately managed accounts (SMAs) tracked within the CIG platform. Strategies represented within the dataset span a range of investment approaches within digital asset markets, including directional and fundamental strategies, quantitative and systematic strategies, and market neutral or relative value strategies. Coverage expands over time as additional managers are onboarded to the platform or identified through the CIG research process.

Composite benchmarks within the CIG Universe are constructed using equal-weighted aggregation of all eligible strategies. Each constituent contributes equally to the benchmark return regardless of fund size or assets under management. This approach is intended to reflect the dispersion of manager performance across the industry rather than allowing the largest funds to dominate composite results. Benchmarks are recalculated automatically as new strategies are added or as existing constituents update their performance data. Where multiple share classes exist, CIG selects representative share classes to maintain comparability across constituents.
Data Integrity & Methodology Governance
Performance and strategy information within the CIG Universe may be sourced from direct manager reporting, fund documentation and investor materials, manager interviews and research coverage, and verified third-party sources where available. Data is reviewed internally by Crypto Insights Group to ensure consistency with the platform’s classification framework and reporting standards.

Strategies are included in the CIG Universe once sufficient performance information becomes available, and performance for each strategy is incorporated beginning from the date it enters the dataset. Because the digital asset hedge fund landscape continues to evolve, the composition of the dataset may change as new managers emerge, strategies launch, or funds cease operations.

Composite benchmarks update dynamically as underlying data changes, allowing the CIG Universe to reflect the current structure of the digital asset hedge fund market. The CIG platform provides transparency into benchmark composition, including underlying constituents, strategy classifications, and historical return data.

The CIG Universe should not be interpreted as a formal benchmark index. Crypto Insights Group also publishes CIG Indices, which follow a more formalized methodology and include stricter inclusion criteria designed for institutional benchmarking. As the industry evolves, CIG may refine the Universe methodology, including updates to classification frameworks, benchmark construction methods, or inclusion criteria.

FAQ´s

You have questions, we have resources and answers

How are managers selected?

Inclusion criteria are defined and applied consistently across index construction.

Are indices investable?

Indices are benchmarking tools and not investment products.

How often are indices updated?

Index data is updated monthly with defined rebalancing cycles.

What strategies are covered?
